Project 4 Art
To synthesize the films The Witch and The Lighthouse (both directed by Robert Eggers), I decided to create an art piece that represents the key elements both of the movies share. What I found in both films is that they use the elements of nature as a character of its own. In The Witch, the reoccurring element is fire. Fire in the film represents satanic folklore and taunting behavior. In The Lighthouse, the element is water (the ocean). This represents seamen folklore and isolation. With synthesizing the elements, I also synthesized the figures and animals. The animals in each film play a huge role in how the characters behave and provoke the horrific situations they go through. The Lighthouse has a cursed seagull that antagonizes the stranded characters along with a sea sirens and squid tentacles that taunts their animal like behavior. The Witch has a main animal of a billy goat which is the devil in disguise that controls the main character into joining the satanic side. The Witch also includes an actual witch spirit that lives within the character throughout the film. Combining these common aspects of Robert Eggers films, I created an art piece using charcoal and acrylic paint that shows suggestions of each element in the films. Someone who has never seen the movies would still be able to understand the horror aspect like the movies have, but someone who has seen the movies before would know exactly what I was inspired by.
