Project 2 Art
I wanted to create a painting for my art portion that represented how the media stripped away Marilyn Monroe's true identity that left her feeling lost, alone, and depressed. I needed to find a style that would give my painting that affect and really capture the struggles and mental torture she had to endure while going through her career in Hollywood. To do this, I decided to take an iconic photo of Monroe as a reference and paint it in detail with oil paints. This is the photo I used:
My next step was to sketch out this image in my own style in my sketchbook. Once I got that down I knew it was what I wanted to use for my final painting. The step after that was to get sheets of plexiglass to put over my sketch so I could paint it in oil. I was to use a technique called "squeegeeing." I wanted to make a few versions of the painting on plexiglass and see what way to squeegee would work the best. What I would do is make three or four copies of Marilyn Monroe in oil paint then have them dry at different times and use different tones in color. Then I would take a piece of board and smear it across the image so it would create a distorted version of that image. Here is my process:
The process itself played a role in my final piece. After smearing Monroe's image over and over again it represented how the media would alter her image constantly, to the point where she couldn't even recognize herself. Each time I would smear the image it reminded me of how the media would beat Marilyn down over and over again until she was mentally unstable.
I decided to make my writing piece correlate with my art by annotating her own poems:
